Battle Down Under: IND vs AUS ODI Showdown

Team India will return from their triumphant win at the Asia Cup Final 2023 and face Australia in three IND vs AUS matches starting Friday, September 22, at IS Bindra Stadium Mohali.

India defeated Sri Lanka with one of the most convincing wins at the Asia Cup Final. India bowled them out in 15.2 overs, setting a 51-run target. Mohammed Siraj proved instrumental, taking six wickets from seven overs. In comparison, vice-captain Hardik Pandya also picked up three wickets, and Jasprit Bumrah took one door himself. India won their match by ten wickets, with Shubman and Ishan Gill playing as openers.

Australia, on the other hand, will return from a bittersweet tour of South Africa. They dominated South Africa in a three-match T20 series while leading 2-0 and by one game during an ODI series that went five matches. Still, South Africa held their nerve and won three out of those five ODI matches against Australia.

India and Australia, two of the premier teams in cricket today, can benefit significantly from participating in this three-match ODI Series. It will serve as an ideal opportunity for their preparations ahead of the World Cup.

All three matches should feature high-scoring games, given Mohali’s first innings ODI averages since 2011 of 309, 312, and 336, respectively. These three ODI matches will serve to prepare India for hosting the ICC ODI World Cup 2023, which begins October 5 here in India.

National Cricket Selectors made significant adjustments to India’s ODI squad ahead of its series against Australia. As part of a strategic decision, Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Hardik Pandya were rested from two of the first three ODIs as a strategic measure designed to maintain their mental and physical wellbeing ahead of the ODI World Cup; KL Rahul took their places. As contingency plans in case Axar Agarwal recovers from injury too slowly or cannot participate, spinner Washington Sundar and off-spinner R Ashwin were added into the squad; Ashwin could even play an active part if Axar cannot recover fully if Axar fails.

Ruturaj Gaikwad will join Ravichandran Ashwin and Washington Sundar in action in the first two ODIs; Rohit, Virat, and Hardik’s more experienced trio will then feature. Axar Patel will be assessed closer to match three.

Shreyas Iyer to make a comeback

“Shreyas wasn’t available for this match as certain parameters had been established for him to complete before being eligible. Today, he completed most of these requirements, and currently, I would say he is 99 percent okay; he batted and played for hours prior to our arrival, and there are no signs that his health is an issue,” Rohit added, not believing any concerns for this matter exist at this time.

Axar Injury Update

“Axar experienced a small tear (of his muscle). We expect healing will take seven to ten days; Rohit mentioned that some guys recovered quicker.”

Rohit Sharma on Ashwin’s recall

Rohit has played Test cricket consistently, and for players like Ashwin, it does not matter where time spent on the field is spent; instead, it is about understanding where his mind and body stand and speaking to him about this decision. Although Ashwin hasn’t played cricket as often since playing ODIs and TNPL matches in Australia, he was reinstated last season; “games against Australia will give us an idea where he stands,” Rohit stated upon hearing of Ashwin being called back in.
