Jio & Airtel New Announcement Related To Their 5G Unlimited Plans

According to an Trendsmyth report, analysts estimate that Jio and Airtel will withdraw their 5G unlimited plans by the second half of 2024. They’ll also charge a minimum of 5-10% higher than the current tariff for 4G to boost revenue and drive monetization.

Reliance Jio launched 5G in the country on October 20, 2022. Since then, they have offered unlimited 5G at 4G rates. The era of complete offers for 5G is ending soon. Both companies plan to roll out 5G nationwide, focusing more on monetization as adoption increases.

Both companies are at the forefront of India’s 5G revolution, with over 125 million users. The number of 5G subscribers in India is expected to surpass 200 million by 2024.

What Happens When The Unlimited 5G Service Ends?

According to the TrendsMyth report citing a Jefferies note, Airtel and Jio’s 5G plans could be increased by 5-10% compared to their current 4G plans while providing 30-40% more data to increase adoption and market share.

To increase RoCE (return on capital employed), the report added that mobile rates might rise by at least 20 per cent in the third quarter of 2024.

While citing data from the International Telecom Union, the TrendsMyth report noted that there was still room for telcos in India to increase prices, as the tariff is still $2 per month, the lowest in the world. It has been over two years since Jio Vi and Airtel raised their taxes in November 2021 by 19-25%.

According to reports, Airtel is the first to increase tariffs. This will be followed by Vodafone Idea, Jio and then Jio. This will result in an increase in India’s mobile sector revenue in 2024.

CLSA estimates, cited by ET, show that India’s mobile revenue will grow from Rs 2,46,800 in FY24 to Rs 2,77,300 in FY25 and Rs 3,07,800 in FY26.

Now These Companies Can Launch New 5G-Specific Plans

Jefferies stated in a research report that “with increasing focus on monetization, and 5G coverage close to completion, we think the telcos may stop offering unlimited data for 5G to their higher ARPU data customers. They will announce 5G-specific plan towards 2HCY24.”

The brokerage firm added that although the 5G price points for Airtel’s and Reliance Jio’s plans could be 10-20% higher than those of 4G, they may include 30-40% more data to encourage adoption and gain market share at the expense cash-strapped Vi.

In its last earnings call held in November 2023, Gopal Vittal, the managing director of Airtel, said that he would only be charging for 5G for a while. Airtel will quickly raise mobile tariffs when the time is right to increase monthly average revenue per customer (ARPU) to Rs 250 from the current level of Rs 200.

Jio and Airtel have a combined 125 million subscribers to 5G. The country’s 5G users will surpass 200 million by 2024.
