Dia Mirza has made animal welfare her mission and advocates strongly for strengthened animal protection laws. Dia Mirza was honoured with being named People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals India’s 2023 Person of the Year award for her commitment to ending animal use for circuses and more. PETA India awarded this honorary title.
PETA India released a statement noting that “her passionate commitment to ending animal exploitation, sexualization and abandonment among other efforts, including adopting homeless animals, made the panel select her.”
Mirza voices PETA India’s lifelike animatronic lion named Ellie. PETA India takes Ellie around schools as an educational tool about kindness.
Mirza stated that he supports PETA India’s petition to outlaw all animals used for circus performances. Mirza joined PETA India’s campaign against the slaughtering of reptiles and other wild animals for their skins, earning Born Free Entertainment an Animal Hero Award from PETA India for depicting homeless dogs being saved during Love Breakups Zindagi.
Mirza posted on her Instagram Stories that Ellie is unique and thanked PETA for their assistance. PETA India takes an anti-speciesism stance.
With their slogan: “Animals don’t belong to us to experiment on, eat or wear, use for entertainment purposes or abuse in any way,” they stand against speciesism and human-centrism in our worldview.
Poorva Joshipura, PETA director in India, recently noted in an interview with Indianexpress.com that while society is rapidly evolving, people often respond by saying we must first address human-centric problems.
“Animals deserve respect in themselves, and many don’t realise how closely humans and animals are related; SARS/COVID-19 infections were believed to originate in wildlife markets while HIV/Ebola transmission occurred through hunting primates for food purposes by humans”.

The PETA Person of the Year Award 2023 was bestowed on former Supreme Court justice KS Panicker, cricketer Virat Sharma, comedian Kapil, and actors Alia Bhatt, John Abraham, and Sunny Leone.
Who is Dia Mirza?
Dia Mirza is an Indian actress. She works primarily in Hindi films. Rekhi was named Femina Miss India Asia Pacific 2000 and went on to win Miss Asia Pacific International. Rekhi debuted in acting with Rehnaa Hai Terre Dil Mein (2001).
Honeymoon Travels Private Limited (2007), Dus (2005), and Sanju (2018) were some of the many films she appeared in as an actress.
Born Free Entertainment was founded with ex-husband Sahil in 2011; their film Love Breakups Zindagi was released on 7 October 2011.

Early Life
Mirza was born in Hyderabad, India, to Frank Handrich, who is a German graphic and industrial fair designer living in Munich, as well as an architect, artist, and interior designer, while Deepa (her Bengali mother) is a landscape designer and interior designer specialising in Bengali gardens;
Both parents were involved with drug rehabilitation, with Frank handling most aspects. After their divorce, she took the surname of Ahmed Mirza, who married Deepa’s mother Deepa; unfortunately, Ahmed passed away four years later in 2004.
Mirza had attended Vidyaranya, a coed high school. Following this experience, she enrolled at Nasr School, an all-girls day school in Khairatabad. Additionally, she attended Stanley Junior College before obtaining a Bachelor of Arts from Ambedkar Open University.
Career
Modelling
Mirza was a marketing executive at Neeraj’s Multimedia Studio while she attended college. She also modelled for TV and print commercials for Wall’s Ice Cream, Emami, and Lipton. She was a second-runner up at the Miss India 2000 pageant and won Miss Asia Pacific in 2000.
Acting
She made her acting debut with Gautham Menon’s Rehnaa Hai Terre Dil Mein, an adaptation of Menon’s Tamil film Minnale.
Since then, she has featured in films like Alag, Dum Deewaanapan Tumko na Bhool Paayenge Tumsa Nahin Dekha A Love Story Parineeta Dus Lage Raho Munna Bhai Salaam Mumbai as Manyata Sanjay’s wife.
The Thappad was nominated as Best Filmfare Award as Best Film. In 2019, she made her ZEE5 Web series Kaafir debut, set in Kashmir and featuring Mohit Rainey as one of its stars.

Personal Life
Mirza became engaged to her longtime business partner, Sahil, in April 2014. They tied the knot on 18 October 2014 at his farmhouse on the outskirts of Delhi.
They celebrated their wedding reception there on 18 October 2014. However, as of August 2019, Mirza and Sangha announced their separation.
Mirza married businessman Vaibhav Rekhi on 15 February 2021 in Bandra, Mumbai. Mirza announced her pregnancy on 1 April 2021 and, on 14 July 2021, announced she gave birth prematurely, giving birth to Avyaan Azaad Rekhi, who spent two months in the NICU. Samaira Rekhi (Vaibhav’s former wife) also has a stepdaughter, Samaira, who lives at home with Mirza.
