The smartphone lineup will likely be revealed in September 2024. Along with the excitement, leaks and rumours about the iPhone 16 have already been circulating online.

Apple’s new iPhone 16 series is expected to have a larger display, upgraded internals using the latest Apple Silicon, and a significantly improved camera system. The iPhone 16 Pro will likely inherit the iPhone 15 Pro Max’s 5x telephoto lens.

Both Pro models will also feature a dedicated button for quick video recording. Leaks suggest introducing a new colour option for the iPhone 2024.

iPhone 16 Design Concepts

Design

A recent MacRumors article revealed mockups based on Apple internal leaks. The report revealed potential designs for Apple’s iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max. The report suggests that the iPhone 16 Pro may retain the creation of the iPhone 15 Pro with some notable changes.

MacRumors claims that the next-generation Apple smartphone lineup will have larger screens, with slightly bigger heights and widths than their predecessors.

Apple may also benefit from the larger size of these devices, which will allow for more space to be used by various components. This upgrade could also lead to the iPhone 16 Pro models integrating larger and longer-lasting batteries.

Apple may also add a capacitive button for Capture. Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman calls this “a dedicated button for recording video.”

MacRumors clarifies further that this button is flush with the iPhone frame and will not be the same as the volume or power buttons. These prototypes may not be in their final form, but actual Pro models will likely look similar to these mockups.

Haptic Buttons

Apple had initially planned to replace the physical volume, power, and mute buttons with solid-state buttons for the iPhone 15 Pro. However, due to “unresolved technological issues,” the feature has been removed from the iPhone 15 Pro.

Rumours now suggest Apple will add solid-state buttons to the iPhone 16 models and delay their introduction until 2024. Bloomberg Mark Gurman states that it’s “likely” Apple will use this technology in the iPhone 16 Pro. If that happens, we may also see the unified buttons rumoured to be used for the iPhone 15 Pro.

Solid-state buttons can be used like physical buttons, but no button press occurs when you press them. A haptic vibration simulates a physical button press, giving you the feeling of pressing the switch despite no movement.

Apple uses solid-state tech for its Touch ID Home button in the iPhone SE and the trackpads on MacBook Pro and MacBook Air. You can press a gesture on these devices and feel like you have packed a physical button.

In reality, the surface is a solid one with haptic feedback. Solid-state buttons can provide better protection against dust and moisture because they do not require a depressing mechanism.

However, it requires extra hardware in the iPhone. Apple was said to have added two extra Taptic Engines for the iPhone 15 Pro to power the solid-state buttons. This is likely how the iPhone 16 Pro will work.

Apple could use solid-state tech for the Action Button and a new capacitive switch while keeping the standard buttons for volume and power control.

According to Apple supplier Cirrus Logic, despite several rumours suggesting that the iPhone 16 Pro will use the technology Apple originally planned for the iPhone 15 Pro model, Barclays analyst believes Apple has no plans to include solid-state buttons on the iPhone 16.

Action Button

In 2024, it is expected that the Action Button will be added to all iPhone 16 models. Apple had been rumoured to implement a capacitive Action Button in 2024 that would provide haptic feedback instead of a standard button. However, those plans have since been tabled. The Action Button is identical to the iPhone 15 Pro Action Button.

The Action button replaces the traditional Mute switch. It can perform various functions, including activating the Flashlight or Camera, launching Shortcuts, disabling Focus Mode, translating, and turning Silent Mode on/off.

Extra Capacitive Button

Apple’s internal versions of the iPhone 16 include an additional capacitive “Capture Button.” The button is on the same side of the power button in the area that the 5G mmWave antenna in the United States occupies.

The mmWave button has now been moved to the device’s left below the volume buttons. Capture Button is a capacitive, pressure-sensitive button. It will provide haptic feedback upon pressing. The Capture Button will be used to take photos and videos.

A-Series chips

Apple’s iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus will likely use an A17 processor, but it’s not expected to be the A17 Pro in the iPhone 15 Pro or iPhone 15 Pro Max.

Apple uses TSMC’s newest N3B chip process for its iPhone 17 Pro but will switch to the cheaper N3E for next year’s standard “A17”.

N3B was TSMC’s original 3-nanometer technology created in partnership with Apple. N3E, on the other hand, is a node with a lower transistor density, lower efficiency, and a higher output.

Apple doesn’t usually design chips for standard iPhone models. Instead, the chips are the same as those used in the Pro models or adopt a chunk of the previous year’s iPhone model. The iPhone 15 used the A16 processor introduced previously in the iPhone 14 Pro.

Analyst Jeff Pu believes that Apple will use A18 or A18 Pro as the naming for the chips used in all iPhone 16 models. Pu believes that all fragments will be manufactured utilising the N3E process. The Pro chips may have an additional GPU core, which is not in the standard chips.

Thermal Improvements

Apple’s iPhone 16 models will likely include a new design to combat overheating. Apple is working on a graphene-based thermal system for iPhone 16 models. The iPhone 16 Pro may also feature a metal casing to improve heat dissipation.

Graphene is more thermally efficient than copper, which is used to make iPhone heat sinks.

5G Modem Chips

iPhone 16 Pro models may be equipped with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X75, allowing faster and more efficient connectivity.

Qualcomm claims that the X75 modem offers better carrier aggregation, and the combined sub-6 Ghz/mmWave transceiver uses up to 20% less power and takes up 25% less space on the circuit board.

Apple can market iPhone 16 Pro models with “5G Advanced connectivity” because Qualcomm’s X75 supports “5G Advanced”, a standard with AI and machine-learning enhancements.

According to rumours, the standard iPhone 16 models will continue to use Qualcomm’s X70 chipset. This chip was also used in iPhone 15 models.

Apple is developing its modem chip to replace Qualcomm. However, Apple’s modem chip will not be ready for 2024. Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo believes an Apple-designed modem chip will be released in 2025.

WiFi 7

Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo believes the iPhone 16 Pro model could adopt net-generation WiFi 7, providing speeds up to 40Gb/s.

WiFi 7 can also use 320MHz and support 4K quadrature amplitude modulation technology (QAM), resulting in speeds up to 2.4x higher than WiFi 6 when using the identical number of antennas. WiFi 7 will provide a more reliable connection with faster transfer speeds and lower latency.

USB-C Port

Apple is expected to use USB-C technology for its iPhone 15 and 16 models.

AI Capabilities

Apple’s iOS 18 is expected to introduce new Siri features that the considerable language model powers. Some of the most cutting-edge AI generative features may be restricted to iPhone 16 models.

Leaked details suggest that iOS 18 will include many new LLM features for all iPhones. However, on-device AI capabilities could be exclusive to the iPhone 16.

They could consist of enhanced interactions between Siri and the Messages App, automatically generated Apple Music playlists, and integration with productivity apps to assist in creating AI content.

Microphone Improvements

Apple’s iPhone 16 models will feature an upgraded microphone to accompany the AI-enhanced Siri. Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo says that the microphone will improve with water resistance and have a higher signal-to-noise ratio. This will “improve Siri’s experience significantly.”

New Colour

Leaked information indicates that Apple will continue to use Grade 5 Titanium for the iPhone 16 Pro Max and iPhone 16 Pro. This is the same material used in the iPhone 15 Pro.

Display

According to reports, the iPhone 16 Pro Max will also feature a 6.3-inch display. Its bigger brother, the iPhone 16 Pro Max, will have a 6.9-inch screen. This change would be a departure from the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max, which had a 6.1-inch screen. MacRumors suggested that the size increase could be a strategy to accommodate new camera features.

Processor

According to leaks, the iPhone 16 may be powered by A18 chips. The vanilla iPhone 16 will be equipped with the A18 chipset. However, the Pro versions could come with the A18 Pro variant. These leaks and rumours are only a guess, and Apple could reveal something different.

Apple has created three iPhone 16 prototypes, each with a slightly different design. All three have a vertically oriented camera, allowing the Vision Pro headset to record spatial video.

The first design featured a camera shaped like an iPhone X, and the second two designs had two lenses. One method had haptic buttons and a single volume button. The third included the two-lens cameras, mechanical volume buttons, and an Action Button.

Apple is likely to choose the third design shown in the images. This is a black phone. The rear camera will be vertically aligned; there will be a second “Capture button” on the right for video recording, and in the United States, a mmWave left antenna below the Action Button.

Apple tested the colours in the images to see the iPhone 16 standard models in pink, black, or yellow.

These renders were created based on information from an internal source who spoke with MacRumors. These images show the standard iPhone 16 models. iPhone 16 Pro models are more significant, have triple-lens cameras, and get the new Capture Button.

iPhone 16 Pro Size Changes

According to multiple sources, the iPhone 16 Pro Max and iPhone 16 Pro are expected to feature larger displays. The iPhone 16 Pro is expected to feature a 6.27-inch display (rounded up to 6.3), and the iPhone 16 Pro Max will likely have a 6.85-inch display (rounded up to 6.9).

The iPhone body’s dimensions will increase due to the larger display. The iPhone 15 Pro and the iPhone 16 Pro are expected to have a larger display and be more expensive. While the thickness of the models will not change, the weight is likely to increase due to their increased size. 

iPhone 16 Camera Technology

iPhone 16 Pro models may include a 48-megapixel Ultra Wide Lens, allowing better images under low lighting conditions. It would probably function similarly to the 48-megapixel Wide Camera, which uses pixel-binned data to combine four pixels into a “superpixel” for better image quality.

According to reports, the 48-megapixel wide-angle camera in the iPhone 16 Pro Max is a hybrid lens of two glass and eight plastic elements. Camera Layout

Super Periscope?

The iPhone 16 Pro Max may feature a super-telephoto periscope for an increased optical zoom. This information is from a Weibo user who has previously provided accurate data but has yet to be confirmed by another reliable source.

Cameras with focal lengths over 300mm are usually called “ultra” or “super” telephoto. If accurate, the current telephoto is equivalent to a lens of 77mm, which could mean a noticeable increase in zoom capability.

Battery

Rumours claim that the iPhone 16 Pro will feature stacked batteries, which could result in a higher capacity and longer life. Stacked batteries have been used in medical devices and electric vehicles for years, but they are a new emerging technology.

The battery stack could be paired with faster charging options such as 40W MagSafe and 20W wired charging. A leaked image from November shows the new iPhone 16 Pro battery with an updated connector and a 3355mAh capacity.

Pricing

Apple’s standard iPhone 15 models had component prices that were at an all-time high. They were up 16 percent from the iPhone 14 models.

Apple has absorbed increased production costs on the iPhone 15 line, but Apple could need to raise the price of the iPhone 16 to avoid a negative impact on overall revenue.

iPhone 16 Release Date
