Happy Lohri 2024: Meaning, History, Significance & More

Happy Lohri: Lohri is one of the biggest festivals in north India. The festival is a Sikh and Hindu celebration that marks the end of the winter solstice and the rabi crop harvest. The festival is celebrated on January 13th with great enthusiasm and zeal every year.

The longer days and warmer temperatures are welcomed by people dressing up in traditional clothing, singing, and dancing around the bonfire.

Lohri Meaning

According to some stories, Lohri is derived from the word ‘loh,’ which refers to a large iron skillet, or tava, used to make chapatis at communal feasts. Another story says that the term was derived from Loi, the wife of reformer Kabir Das.

Lohri History

The festival’s origin can be traced to the story of Dulla Bhatti, a legendary hero from Punjab who led a revolt against Mughal Emperor Akbar. He became a hero to the Punjabi people for his bravery. In almost all Lohri songs, there are words of gratitude.

Lohri Significance

Lohri is a tremendous, important festival, as it marks the harvesting of the rabi crop and the end of winter. They thank the sun and fire for the harvest and worship them. All communities celebrate the day under different names.

First, Lohri marks fertility and is considered auspicious by new brides and newborn babies. Farmers also hold great significance for the festival. According to the Indian Calendar, Lohri is celebrated in the month of Pausha. Makar Sankranti, the celebration of kites, immediately follows it.

Lohri – A Celebration Of The Festival

Lohri, traditionally, is celebrated with a giant bonfire lit in the yard following the cutting of the rabi crop. The goddess Lohri is represented by small idols made from cattle dung placed beneath the bonfire.

At sunset, the bonfire is lit, and people in traditional clothing circle it, throwing sesame seeds and jaggery. The people sing and dance around the bonfire until the fire goes out.

They pray this way to the fire deity to bless their land and bring them prosperity. After this, people exchange gifts and greetings with friends and family.

Lohri celebrations are only complete with consuming sugarcane products like jaggery and gajak. These are produced from crops harvested during January. As prasad, til (as well as peanuts and popcorn) are distributed to the people. Dinner includes Makki ki Roti and Sarson ka Saag.

We wish everyone a happy Lohri.
