IPL auction 2024: Mini-auctions of the Indian Premier League will take place in Dubai on 19 December, and each of its 10 IPL clubs must make calculations to find players within their limited budgets.

Teams should consider various factors, including supply and demand when making these selections and prioritising Indian talent.

Some franchises were taken aback to see that some key players from their roster have now been released for auction, which means franchises will bid aggressively to acquire talent – the Rs 250 crore allocated for purchasing 77 slots will cover 333 players.

It’s not the location, but will the Rs. 20 crore mark be broken during the IPL auction? That will be the deciding factor. Franchises can wait to make plans for the 2024 player auction, as it will serve as the last step before an overhaul next year.

Spending big can also secure franchises with an A-list player under contract, allowing them to keep him for next year’s auction.

Starc And Cummins In Focus

Fans will no doubt anticipate an exciting table battle over big-ticket purchases, with Australia’s ODI World Cup players like Mitchell Starc and Travis Head looking to cash in big time – Pat Cummins will also hope to do well financially from their World Cup participation.

Franchises will likely show interest in New Zealand allrounder Rachin Ravindra and India’s Shardul Thakhur, the sole World Cup squad member being auctioned.

How the Franchises Stand

Notably, four franchises comprise this league: Chennai Super Kings (Rs. 31.40 crore), Gujarat Titans (Rs. 14.90 crore) and Kolkata Knight Riders (Rs. 32.70 crore) A group of players could expect a substantial payday if their purse exceeds the 30 crore mark.

Last year’s record bid of Rs. 1.03 crore by SRH for England’s Sam Curran needs to be clarified, and we must wait to see if that bid translates into anything tangible for Sam.

Knight Riders, under the tutelage of Gautam Gambhir, are set for an exhausting day at auction – needing to fill all twelve spots available after having nearly depleted their pace bowling unit before the sale.

Mumbai Indians, Delhi Capitals and KKR each have four overseas slots; each team can spend up to four. Knight Riders may spend big on Starc or Head; however, the Mumbai Indians’ budget will likely limit such spending.

CSK and SRH can only fill six slots of the three southern teams – Royal Challengers Bangalore is Rs. 23.25 crore

Uncapped players remain popular auction targets. Shahrukh Khan, Shubham Dubey, Sameer Rizvi and Sameer Vijay could all see intense bidding battles at auctions;

Maharashtra Under-19 star Arshin Kulkarni may also draw significant bidding interest as an attacking medium-pacer who can hit hard. 20 lakh is being set aside as the reserve amount.

Look At The Bids Each Team Is Planning To Make During The IPL 2024 Auction

1. Chennai Super Kings: Chennai Super Kings have set aside Rs31.4 billion as their budget and will look to fill some vital positions within their squad.

Manish Pandey may fill Ambati Rayudu’s role in the middle order. At the same time, Shardul Thakur was released before the auction – and CSK hopes he returns after recent performances across India.

2. Gujarat Titans: The Mumbai Indians franchise is grappling with some tough questions after Hardik Pandya returned home, as his return will bring some difficult decisions and decisions about player acquisitions in mini auctions.

They hope to secure players such as Shardul Thakur, Rachin Ravindra, Daryl Mitchell and Azmatullah Ommarzai as critical cogs in their early success as a franchise.

3. Delhi Capitals: Rishabh Pan’s comeback remains uncertain after missing all of the 2023 season due to injuries suffered in an accident, while the team faces talent issues.

With an annual budget of Rs 28.95 billion available for recruitment purposes, they will look for experienced players such as Priyansh Harshal, Shardul Thakur Jos Inglis and Wanindu to sign as new acquisitions.

4. Rajasthan Royals: Rajasthan Royals have long been recognized for identifying promising young talent through an exhaustive selection process that involves domestic tournaments and trials. Individuals who have displayed talent at Syed Mushtaq Ali tournaments, TNPL, or UP Premier League will be seriously considered.

Batters like Sameer Rizvi or Swastik Chikara could also be on their radar. With an approximate purse of Rs 14.50 billion, this team looks set for success!

5. Royal Challengers Bangalore: Harshal Patel was a fantastic performer for Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), so the decision to release him has caused some consternation among fans.

They plan to replace Patel with Mitchell Strac or Pat Cummins from Australia as replacement players – they currently boast an auction purse of Rs 23.25 crores!

6. Sunrisers Hyderabad: Shardul Thakur and Harshal Patel represent two viable options to fill out their team with Indian players, given its lack of Indian representation. With Rs 34 crore, a franchise should pursue these two in the bidding and make substantial offers.

Furthermore, they must secure the services of an expert fast bowler from overseas and another batter of Indian descent for top-order batters to complete this roster.

7. Mumbai Indians: Management was heavily criticised for their decision to replace Rohit with Hardik as captain of their franchise, with Hardik having the team budget of Rs 17.75 crore set aside to find combinations at auction – specifically targeting Hasaranga Manav Suthar Ashutosh Darshan Misal as players to look out for.

8. Punjab Kings: With a purse worth Rs 29.10 crores, Punjab Kings is likely to show a keen interest in Shardul Thakur. Harshal Patel and Rachin Rachin will also be on the radar. Rachin Ravindra is a good prospect for the franchise, with two slots left to fill.

9. Kolkata Knight Riders: The team enters the IPL 2024 auction with a cash balance of Rs 32.70 billion. The franchise desperately needs some pace bowlers.

Players like Mitchell Starc and Pat Cummins will be looked to with hope. There is also a need to replace Shahbaz Ahmad, who was traded to Sunrisers Hyderabad.

10. Lucknow Super Giants: The LSG is actively considering players like Starc, Hazlewood and Gerald Coetzee as fast-bowling replacements for Mark Wood. Nandre Burger or Dilshan Madushanka could be left-arm pacer candidates.

At the same time, Ashutosh Sharma may provide another option for Indian batters not yet signed to their franchise – LSG has an estimated purse of Rs. 13.15 crore for any newcomers they bring on board.
