Jasprit Bumrah is the first Indian quick to top the ICC Test Bowlers Rankings. Bumrah has climbed three positions to become the No.1 R Ashwin, previously ranked No. 1, is now replaced by Bumrah. His highest ranking was No. 3.
Kapil Dev, who played from December 1979 to February 1980, was ranked No. Kapil Dev occupied the No. 2 spot on the retroactive Test bowlers table from December 1979 until February 1980.
Zaheer Khan, in addition to Bumrah, has also held the No. In October-November 2010, the No. 3 position was occupied by Zaheer Khan.
Bumrah has risen to prominence after a match haul (9 for 91) in the second test against England at Visakhapatnam. He was named Player of the Match as India tied the series 1-1.
Six of these wickets were taken in the first test, where he took his tenth 5-for-all in his 34th match, in which he became the fastest Indian to reach 150 Test wickets.
With a two-way reverse pitch, he put India in the lead. He got Joe Root to edge into slip and smashed Ollie Pope with a searing yorker that swung inwards to destroy both middle and leg stumps.
Later, he dismissed Jonny Stokes and Ben Bairstow to give India a 143-run lead in the first innings.
Bumrah had a similar impact in the second inning, picking up 3 for 46. Bumrah caught and bowled Foakes, who was threatening to save England in their pursuit of 399.
Bumrah has 15 wickets at a strike rate of 10.67. He took six wickets during the first test in Hyderabad, in which India lost 28 runs.
Bumrah, Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja, and Bishan Singh Bedi are the only Indian players topped the charts. Bumrah’s previous position, third, was achieved on several occasions by the 30-year-old.
Bumrah, who was ranked No.4 before the start of the second test, has now jumped up three spots to the top. Ashwin, the No.1 Test Bowler since March last year, falls third on the updated rankings.
South Africa’s pace spearhead, Kagiso Rahbada, maintains second place despite missing the Proteas Test series against New Zealand.
Bumrah’s 9/91 match figures were impressive during the 106-run win over England that equalled the series in the second test in Visakhapatnam.
Bumrah won Player of the Match for his nine-wicket haul, ahead of India opener Yashasvi Jaiswal, who scored two hundred in India’s opening innings.
Despite conditions often favourable to spin bowlers, Bumrah was India’s most effective bowler in this series. Bumrah’s figures in the second test were 6/45 for England in their first innings and 3/6 in the second.
The cricket world praised Bumrah’s delivery that dismissed Ollie Pope, a viciously reverse-swinging yorker that smashed the middle and leg stumps.
Bumrah played his sixth Test in India. He has been injured or rested most of the times India hosted a red ball series since he debuted in 2018.
He has taken 29 wickets at home in Tests, with an average of just 13.06. Bumrah has taken 155 wickets at an average of 20.19 in 34 Test matches.
On the other hand, Ashwin took three wickets during the second innings but none in his first. This resulted in him being dropped to the fourth position.
He has 499 doors to his name and is just one exit away from becoming the second Indian, after Anil Kumble, to reach 500 Test wickets.
Jaiswal Rises 7 Places
Yashasvi Jaiswal scored 209 out of 290 balls, almost enough to take India close to 400 in the first innings. Shubman Gil scored 34, and India was all out with 396, despite Jaiswal scoring more than 200 runs.
The 22-year-old has risen 37 spots to 29th in the Test rankings. Joe Root, the Englishman ranked second in the Test rankings before, has now dropped to third place.
Australia’s Steve Smith is now his replacement. Zak Crawley, a teammate of Root’s, improved eight areas to 22nd after two innings in which he scored 70s during the second test.
