Know How IPL Trading System Works

IPL Trading System: Social media has been abuzz with reports that Hardik Pandya may return to Mumbai Indians. After winning four titles with them – 2015, 2019, and 2020 – Hardik was demoted from their starting eleven and selected by Gujarat Titans for Rs 15 crore before winning their inaugural IPL title, followed by a second-place finish the next season (2023).

Hardik was recently traded from GT to MI in a cash-only transaction, and this video provides a helpful explanation.

What is the IPL Trading Window?

Before each auction, IPL franchises hold a trading period for retained and released players before conducting an auction for released players.

Any surplus releases are added directly into franchise purses so they can make intelligent purchases during the auction day.

When is the IPL 2024 Trading Period Closed?

The IPL Final was held on the same date, so BCCI extended the trading window to November 26 instead of November 19 this year. The IPL organizers must receive the list of players retained by all ten teams on November 26.

When Can A Player Be Traded?

Players in the IPL can move freely between franchises during the trading period, using either player-to-player trades or cash transactions.

According to IPL regulations, the trading window for players opens a whole month after the season’s conclusion and continues to open up until one week before auctions take place – then one more week until IPL 2024 starts again – although the current trading window will stay open only up to December 12 with auction scheduled for December 19. However, it will reopen on December 20 and remain open up to one month prior.

What Does A One-Way Exchange Mean?

At an all-cash deal, players from Team A to Team B transfer for all cash payments; in Hardik Pandya’s case, this was equal to his auction price with Gujarat Titans;

All cash deals had also occurred in IPL, like when Kolkata Knight Riders swapped Lockie Ferguson for Rahmanullah Gurbaz back in November 2022.

What Does A Two-Way Exchange Mean?

The difference between the prices of the players is paid by the team that wants to swap.

What Happens If More Than One Franchise Is Interested In Purchasing A Player?

Two franchises may want to purchase a player. The franchise selling the player will have the right to select which franchise it intends to sell to the cricketer.

What Is A Transfer Fee? Who Decides It? What Is The Limit?

Transfer fees are amounts paid from one franchise to another when making trades, which aren’t factored into the player purchase price.

When Hardik moved between franchises, Mumbai paid Titans an unspecified transfer fee; this fee doesn’t count towards the auction purse or affect any players’ contracts.

Before finalising their trade agreement, both franchises agree on an acceptable transfer fee amount, with no maximum limit; only IPL and involved parties know its exact amount.

Does The Transfer Fee Impact The Auction Purse?

No. In Hardik’s situation, Mumbai’s auction pot will only decrease by INR15 crore as his price goes into their auction purse, while Titans’ auction purse increases. Furthermore, transfer fees are not factored into this equation.

How Many Players Were Bought And Sold During The IPL 2024 Trading Period?

Only five trades have been confirmed before the close of the window. A West Indies bowling all-rounder, Romario Shepherd, has been traded from Lucknow Super Giants to Mumbai Indians.

LSG has also traded Avesh Khan for Devdutt padikkal. Hardik Pandya has been sold from Mumbai Indians to Gujarat Titans, Camron Green has been sold from Mumbai Indians to Royal Challengers Bangalore, and Mayank Dagar has been traded from Sunrisers Hyderabad to Royal Challengers Bangalore.
