A disturbingly high number of times. Mission Raniganj is a film where theatrics are hammed up to the maximum. In November 1989, a coal mining site in Raniganj in West Bengal was inundated, and 71 workers couldn’t leave.
Others evacuated after the distress call. Jaswant Ghll, Freedom Sales’s Senior Engineer, led an unmatched courage and wit rescue operation.
Mission Raniganj Story
On November 13, 1989, 232 miners were trapped after flooding in India’s first coal mine, Raniganj. A crack caused by an explosion had led to the flooding.
Six miners died, 161 were evacuated instantly, and the remainder took refuge at a high spot inside the mine. Jaswant Gill, a young Indian School of Mines engineer, saved the day when almost everyone had lost hope.
He created an iron capsule, dropped it by digging a borehole, and saved 65 miners. In this one-dimensional movie, Tinu Suresh Desai recreates the heroic feat that needs to be told, which is essential to young people, because Akshay wanted to play another real-life hero.
Star shines most in roles where he must channel his inherent simplicity and unalloyed optimism. He delivers a sincere performance here as the sincere Sardar, who earned the nickname Capsule Gil after the successful mission.
His presence limits the scope. In a time of privatization and the rise of private sector enterprises in India, the film inadvertently brings to mind the importance of PSUs for the Indian commoner.

Desai is to be commended for using time wisely with the build-up. Instead, he takes us to the accident and rescue mission. The mining operation and its essential details are reminiscent of analogue days.
The colour scheme for emotions is from when black and white were the predominant emotions. Characters with vested interests could be seen at a distance.
Desai is trying to emphasize that the antagonists are the Bengalis, who do not want the North Indian Hero to succeed. However, in doing so, he appeals to stereotypes.

Story is Related to a True Events
A film about mining also scratches the surface, refusing to go into depth on the safety measures needed to be followed and trade unions’ impact. In celebrating Gill’s courage, the film almost forgot the six miners who lost their lives.
A strong supporting cast, known for its melodrama skills, lifts the insipid subject matter. The film is awash with competent actors like Sudhir Pandey Jameel, Ravi Kishan Varun Badola Kumud Mishra Pawan Malhotra Divyendu, Bhattacharya Rajesh Sharma Arif Zakaria, Virendra, Saxena and Kumud.
As it is a one-person show, they are all there to provide muscle for the central character. Parineeti is also there to give Akshay a halo. The most moving moment in the film is when a trapped miner’s pet dog comes to rescue them.
Gill’s struggle to reach the trapped miner through the borehole is a metaphor for the conversation between PSUs at the grass-root level and their employees. The film is shallow in discussing the management vs. anti-management debate among miners.
Gill refers to the mission at the end as “our” success. However, the way the film is presented it remains an Akshay Kumar show.

Mission Raniganj on OTT
Tomorrow, on October 6, 2023, the film will be released. We now know the OTT streaming service that will offer Mission Raniganj before its theatrical release. It is now official that Netflix will release the film a few months after its theatrical run.
Parineeti makes an extended 10-minute special appearance in this movie. Bollywood Hungama reported that the film is about trapped miners in a cave who need to be rescued before it collapses.
The producers were forced to focus on the main track to keep the audience interested and excited. Parineeti’s song needs to be given more attention.
Parineeti’s song is, therefore, given little attention. The source said that her screen time was around 10 minutes.

The first-day box office collection of the film reveals that it had one of the lowest openings ever for an Akshay Kumar film, as it only earned a single-digit amount on its opening.
According to the film industry tracker Sacnilk, the film collected a modest Rs 2.8 million on its first release day. This is one of Akshay Kumar’s weakest opening days.
Akshay Kumar’s previous film ‘OMG 2’ grossed double-digit numbers of Rs10.26 crores on its first day, despite being up against Sunny Deol’s ‘Gadar 2’, released on the same date.
