Renowned classical singer Ustad Rashid Khan died this afternoon while undergoing treatment at a Kolkata hospital for prostate cancer. The maestro is survived by a wife, two children, and one daughter. He was 55 years old.

Ustad Rashid Khan died at 3:45 pm despite the best efforts of the hospital, according to a report by PTI, citing an official from the private hospital in which he was being treated.

On Instagram, several prominent singers, including Rekha Bhardwaj and Sonu Nigam, have expressed sadness over Khan’s death.

West Bengal’s chief minister, Mamata Banerjee, expressed deep sadness at the news. She said, “This is an enormous loss for our entire nation and the music community.”

She said, “I am still in pain because I can’t believe Rashid Khan has passed away.” Banerjee visited the hospital to stand with the singer’s family.

Banerjee has announced that Ustad Rashid Khan will be accorded state honors and a gun salute before his scheduled last rites on Wednesday. His body will go into a mortuary on Tuesday and then be transported to Rabindra Sadan on Wednesday for the last rites.

It is unfortunate. He was only 55 when he died. This is a massive loss for us all and the nation. He was my brother. Banerjee said to reporters that he used to call her mother. Khan was admitted to a private hospital located in East Kolkata, India, on 22 November last year. He had suffered from an intracerebral hemorrhage.

A team of neurosurgeons decided to continue conservative treatment. He was doing well, but because he had been in the hospital all these days, he acquired an infection that spread quickly.

He was placed on a ventilator this morning. “We tried everything but could not revive him,” said a senior doctor at the hospital. He died at 3:45 pm.

The musician was receiving ventilation support. After a cerebral stroke last month, his health deteriorated.
Ustad Khan was survived by his wife, two children, and a grandchild.

“Ustad Rashid Khan received our highest civilian award, the Banga Bibhushan, and our Sangeet Mahsamman. Banerjee wrote in a blog post that Rashid Khan was a consultant to several state cultural organizations. The Padma Shri was awarded to the classical vocalist in 2006, and the Padma Bhushan will be given in 2022.”

“He was originally from Uttar Pradesh but loved West Bengal so much that he settled here. He called me a mother. Ses body would be in a morgue. On Wednesday afternoon, there would be a salute with a rifle. Banerjee added that the last rites will be performed afterward.
