Swachh Survekshan 2023: Indore is again the cleanest city in India for the seventh year. Surat shared the top ranking with Indore for the first time in the Swachh Survekshan 2018 results.

Since 2020, Surat has been consistently ranked as the second-cleanest city. Navi Mumbai is the third cleanest city, with a population exceeding 1 lakh.

Droupadi Murmu, President of India, unveiled the Swachh Survekshan 2023 results. Saswad is the cleanest city in Maharashtra among cities with less than 1 lakh inhabitants. Patan, in Chhattisgarh, and Lonavala, in Maharashtra, took the second and third places in this category.

Mhow won the award for the cleanest cantonment, and Varanasi was recognized as the best of the Ganga towns. Maharashtra was the most pristine state, followed by Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh.

According to the government, the 8th edition results of the urban sanitation survey were revealed on Thursday. This marks it as the most extensive urban cleaning survey in the world.

The survey began in 2016 and covered only 73 major cities, but it will grow to include 4,477 cities by 2023. The rankings for this year placed an increased focus on legacy dumpsites and plastic waste management, as well as adhering to the principles of Reduce, Reuse, Recycling, and ensuring SafaiMitra’s safety.

The survey’s focus on citizen feedback and engagement was instrumental to its success. The survey was conducted on a total population of 409,000,000. The assessment received 12 crore responses from citizens this year. This is an unprecedented level.

Swachh Survekshan – Delhi is Cleaner than Chandigarh

Chandigarh was ranked 11th among the Swachh Survekshan results 2023 announced on Thursday. It was awarded the Safaimitra Surakshit Shehar Award for having the highest safety standards among sanitation workers.

The evaluation criteria included:

  • Implementing the principles of reuse.
  • Recycling and the safety of Safaimitras.

Chandigarh has won the award as the city with the best sanitation worker safety standards — Safaimitra Surakshit Shehar.

According to the detailed report, Chandigarh has scored 100% in all categories of cleanliness, including markets, public toilets, water bodies, and residential areas.

The city has 99 percent door-to-door collection of waste and 97 percent source segregation. This year, the city has also added a new criterion: 67 percent remediation of dumpsites.

Rankings from 2 to 66 over the years

Chandigarh Municipal Corporation has participated in the Swachh Survekshan sanitation survey since its conception. In 2016, the city was ranked second among 73 other cities. In 2017, the city ranked 11th out of 434 cities.

In 2018, it ranked 3rd among the 4,203 municipalities that were surveyed. Chandigarh dropped from 11th to 20th in the national rankings for 2019.

Chandigarh was ranked 16th in 2020 and 66th in 2021. In 2022, the city ranked 12th.

Maharashtra Marked India’s Cleanest State

According to India’s Annual Cleanliness Survey, Maharashtra is the cleanest state in India. Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh are the two states that come after Maharashtra. In the annual survey, Surat and Indore were named the most pristine cities.

President Droupadi Murmu presented the Swachh Survekshan Awards 2023 to the winning winners at an event here. Hardeep Singh Puri, Union Housing and Urban Affairs minister, and others attended.

In 2016, the Swachh Bharat Mission Urban launched its annual awards. The 2023 awards were given to 4,416 local urban bodies, 61 cantonments, and 88 Ganga Towns.

According to the Ministry of Information, the ranking exercise received 1.58 crore online feedback from citizens and 19.82 lakh in-person views.
