Jasprit Bumrah became the fastest Indian pacer to take 151 Test wickets. Then he completed his six-wicket haul to put India in complete control of the second Test match in Visakhapatnam.
England were bowled out for 253 after Bumrah finished with 6/45. England started well after India was all out for 396, but the hosts turned the tables during the second session.
Kuldeep Yadav dismissed Ben Duckett after a potentially dangerous opening stand. Crawley began to hit boundaries with abandon before Axar Patel ended his stay at 76 from just 78.
Jasprit took over and first dismissed Joe Root for the eighth time in his career before destroying Ollie Pope, who scored 196 runs in his last innings with a vicious, reverse-swinging yorker.
Ben Stokes and Jonny Bairstow are now in the middle. Bumrah and Kuldeep took two wickets in the last session to put England into trouble.
India was all out earlier for just 396 on a calm wicket despite Yashasvi Jaiswal scoring 209 from 290 balls. Shubman Gil’s score of 34 was the second-best in the Indian innings.
Jaiswal had little support. Jaiswal is the third youngest Indian in Test Cricket to reach that milestone after Vinod Gavaskar and Sunil Kambli. This has been an incredibly impressive inning, which has brought India almost solely to 400.
He began Day 2 with Ravichandran Ashwin on the other end. The pair survived the first 30 minutes of Day 2 with the scoreboard still ticking.
However, Ashwin was eventually bowled out by a ferocious James Anderson, who, along with Shoaib Bashir, had been England’s most effective bowler throughout the morning.
Jaiswal is the only Indian batsman who has taken advantage of the excellent start he received. Shubman Gill, however, has scored 34 runs off 46 balls despite the pitch being as friendly as it is in India.
The pitch will only become more difficult as the match progresses. Still, India’s failure to score as many runs as they should have was one of the main reasons they lost the first test in Hyderabad.
Jaiswal’s teammates did not score more than 100 runs in any of their stands with him, even though Jaiswal reached the final score on Day 1.
The third wicket stand between Jaiswal and Shreyas was the best, with 90 runs produced in 131 deliveries. Jaiswal scored 63 runs in 72 balls, and Iyer fell to Tom Hartley with 27 off 59.
Shubman Gil looked better than in his previous Test innings, but James Anderson’s genius undid him. Rehan Ahmed’s excellent delivery on 32 was why debutant Rajat Patel fell.
Axar Patel, who was sent ahead of KS Bharat as No.6, had an extra responsibility at the bat. He threw away this added responsibility by slashing Shoaib Bashir straight to backward point on 27.
Bharat then lost it by being caught in the same area off Rehan on 17. In the final half-hour of Day 1, the hosts gave the bowling team two wickets.
India came into this match with a completely different strategy than the one they used for their first innings last week in Hyderabad. Jaiswal started with Rohit Sharma and his captain more cautiously than in the first test when he smashed a flurry with wild-eyed boundaries.
After the Indian openers scored only 40 runs in 17.3 overs, Bashir became Rohit’s first Test wicket. Gill was also able to wait and shift gears when Anderson bowled him.
Shoaib Bashir, the debut spinner of England, was the star. Bashir bowled 28overs, 10 more than Tom Hartley, who finished with 2/100. Rehan did not bowl much during the day but came in towards the end and took two wickets.
Hartley then dismissed Iyer to end India’s most successful partnership. Anderson, a veteran who debuted long before Rehan or Bashir was even born, proved to be a dangerous bowler in any conditions. He bowled 17 overs and scored just 30 runs, taking Gill’s wicket.
