France Launched UPI System: The Unified Payments Interface was officially launched Friday at the Eiffel Tower in Paris. According to the Indian Embassy in France, this is part of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s “vision of taking UPI globally.”

According to a joint statement from India and France, by 2023, they will be committed to creating a vibrant ecosystem, fostering collaborations to empower their citizens, and ensuring they fully participate in the digital age.

NPCI International Payments Limited and France’s Lyra Collect signed an agreement to implement the Unified Payment Interface in France and Europe.

In July of last year, during his visit to France, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced that India had agreed to use UPI as a payment method. It will start with the Eiffel Tower. PM Modi announced that Indian tourists can make payments in Rupees in France.

In his address to the Indian community in Paris at La Seine Musicale on the 14th of July, PM Modi stated, “Being India’s digital platforms or India’s UPI, they have brought about a massive social transformation in this country.

I am pleased that India and France are also working together in this direction. India and France agreed to use UPI for France. After the agreement, I will leave. It is up to you to continue.

Recently, French President Emmanuel Macron was the Chief Guest for the Republic Day Parade in India. In Jaipur, Macron and Narendra Modi interacted over tea at a tea shop.

Macron made a payment using UPI. Modi explained UPI to Macron earlier when the two leaders visited a local shop in Jaipur during their Hawa Mahal visit.

UPI is Now Available For Indian Tourists To Visit The Eiffel Tower

NPCI International Payments, a subsidiary company of NPCI, partnered with French e-commerce and proximity payment provider Lyra to accept the UPI payment mechanism throughout France.

Indian tourists are the second largest international visitors to the Eiffel Tower. The Eiffel Tower became the first merchant in France to offer UPI payments. Plans are to expand this service to other retailers in France and Europe.

India and Singapore have partnered with PayNow to facilitate quick and affordable payments across borders.

This was done in February last year. Now, mobile numbers can transfer money between India and Singapore or from Singapore to India via virtual payment addresses.

In October 2023, Al Etihad Payments of Abu Dhabi and the NIPL signed a Memorandum of Understanding to enable cross-border payments.

National Payments Corporation of India has been in talks with US, European, and West Asian countries to expand UPI service.
