IND vs SA: Can India Win The 2nd Test & Draw The Series, See Here

IND vs SA: India’s men’s team had an excellent year competing in ODIs and international matches but did not secure any major titles.

South Africa provided a stark reminder to the Rohit-led side in the final game of 2023 with an innings-and-32-run defeat at Centurion during the first Test Match.

India’s humiliating surrender at SuperSport Park after just three days was shocking for many. They arrived as favourites to win South African soil and had high hopes of making history by winning their maiden Test series since first visiting in 1992-93;

Instead, the humiliating defeat has made any chance of that happening a distant fantasy – in what’s likely a 2-Test series resulting in only 1-1 draws possible now.

Rohit Sharma and Co have an opportunity to atone for their dismal performance on the “Highveld” and kickstart 2024 with a positive start by defeating South Africa at Cape Town’s Newlands in the second test.

Victory in that match would enable India to end their tour on a high note; MS Dhoni led his squad successfully through this task back in 2010-11.

Before the second test begins on Wednesday, let’s take a quick look back at past performances by the team at this venue.

India’s Test Record At Cape Town

Since 1992-93, Team India has only won four Tests in South Africa. The Newlands Cricket Ground is the only place where they have not won a Test match. Their best results are two draws.

Matches: 6

Won: 0

Lost: 4

Draw: 2

India triumphed at Johannesburg’s Wanderers Stadium twice – in 2006 and 2018 under Rahul Dravid’s captaincy – including their maiden triumph against South Africa since Rahul Dravid made his debut back in 1995.

Subsequently, Dhoni’s team defeated Proteas captain Graeme Smith at Durban Kingsmead before Virat Kohli led India to an emphatic 113-run victory at SuperSport during their last visit in 2021-22.

In 1992-93, during India’s inaugural tour to South Africa, the Proteas won by an innings and 84 runs despite Sachin Tendulkar’s patient 73 score.

Javagal Srinath took 4/33 of batted deliveries for the second innings to earn the Player of the Match award.

Tendulkar scored 146 runs in the first innings to help Dhoni’s side win their second draw of 2011, marking his 51st Test century and final one from his distinguished career.

Tendulkar had earlier scored a hundred in this venue during a losing cause – in 1997. Tendulkar’s 169 runs, combined with Mohammad Azharuddin 115’s 222-run partnership, enabled India to post 359 from an initial total of 58/5 to avoid follow-on in their innings 1 of that test series against South Africa – however, the Proteas then dismissed India for just 144 runs during innings 2 of said tour; giving them an easy 282-run win while taking 2-0 in that series!

Seventy-two runs defeated India despite a strong second innings performance from Jasprit Bhumrah, who made his Test debut, taking four wickets, including 3 for 39 in the second innings.

Team India arrived at Newlands tied at 1-1 with the series after winning Test 1 and levelled at Newlands after beating hosts South Africa 10-0;

However, in both instances, the Proteas won by winning both chases – by five wickets for chase 211 in 2007 and seven wickets for chase 212. In 2022, this marked Kohli’s final game as captain.
