Virat Kohli Hits 50th ODI Century Breaks Sachin Record

Virat Kohli celebrated reaching his 50th ODI Century by bowing to Sachin Tendulkar, who was present and applauding from Wankhede seats.

At first, it appeared like Virat Kohli had gone through his customary celebration of reaching 100. Still, instead, he fell to his knees in gratitude before offering prayerful thanksgiving. Kohli then rose and removed his helmet and gloves with pride;

He had accomplished something never done before in cricket; almost literally at the pinnacle of his game, there was no one for whom to bow before or take credit; millions were watching around the world at Wankhede Stadium, including Sachin Tendulkar’s 49 ODI century mark which seemed unbreakable only a few short years ago – just before becoming first player ever in any format to score 50th ODI century;

Something never before accomplished before by any player before him; no one. Kohli made history, becoming the first player to score the 50th ODI hundred, making history a few short years ago when Tendulkar left 49 years ago with a 49 centuries tally before going on record 49. Kohli became the first player to achieve this milestone, the only player in history to break that record by reaching 50th place.

Kohli had just missed out on scoring his 49th century at Eden Gardens in Kolkata against South Africa earlier. Still, fate had something else planned: He completed it today against India and thus broke his world record on an even grander stage.

Virat Kohli’s 50 ODI Centuries

What was Tendulkar’s response at Wankhede? Like everyone else at the venue, he stood and clapped his hands as loudly as possible while showing genuine happiness – his genuine smile said more than words could convey.

A decade earlier, in an interview, Tendulkar stated he wouldn’t mind if another Indian player broke his record, with Rohit Sharma being named as an unlikely contender;

Tendulkar would be delighted if that prediction turned out to be correct and thrilled if proven right by history.

Kohli, 35 years old, achieved his third century of the tournament against fast bowler Lockie Ferguson after facing 106 balls and hitting eight fours and one six.

Tendulkar’s accomplishment was even more remarkable because this was his final international match against West Indies in a Test match for India at this venue.

Kohli recently played his 279th One Day International (ODI), notching 50 hundred and 71 fifties.

Kohli was still working on his party: when Anushka appeared as his crucial supporter, he kissed her. At the same time, the New Zealanders joined in.

Kohli became the most prolific scorer of any World Cup edition ever played, overthrowing Sachin Tendulkar’s (673) runs set back in 2003’s tournament. Tendulkar set the previous mark during that World Cup edition.

Kohli became the leading run scorer at this World Cup, surpassing South Africa’s Quinton De Kock (591 runs) and New Zealander Rachin Ravindra (565).

Kohli holds the third spot on the list for most runs scored in one-day internationals, following Tendulkar (18,426) and Kumar Sangakkara (14,524). Kohli improved upon Ricky Ponting’s 13 704 runs to take third place.

Kohli currently ranks third on the list of international cricketers with 50 or more scores – behind Tendulkar (264) and Ponting (217), holding 217 scores, respectively.
