BCCI officials prefer Rohit Sharma to lead their T20 team ahead of the World Cup 2019. With six T20Is remaining before World Cup 2024 and Rohit and Jasprit Bhumrah being considered automatic selections, many question his place in the starting XI.

Kohli’s T20 Position Is Still Being Determined

Kohli became the first cricketer ever to score 700+ runs in an ODI World Cup edition; however, Ishan Kishnan is considered a strong candidate for the No.3 position in T20Is, and reports indicate that selectors want an attacking cricketer with immediate potential to lead from No.3.

Kohli is the leading T20I run scorer globally and will face stiff competition when opening for Royal Challengers Bangalore during the Indian Premier League (IPL).

Selectors have suggested Kishan as the No.3 batsman, with opening slots already taken by Suryakumar Jadav and Rinku Singh, respectively.

Shreyas Iyer had played all 11 World Cup matches, so he was called in as a replacement for Suryakumar in Australia’s two final matches against them, while Kishan, who faced being cut during World Cup, along with Jitesh Sharma, who replaced Kishan, was flown into India from overseas for this series.

This decision by the BCCI illustrates its willingness to change and rearrange its team as necessary to find optimal combinations.

Ishan Kishan was instrumental in India’s first T20I match against Australia. His impressive knock of 58 runs off 39 balls helped them chase down their mammoth 209-run target.

Kishan showed his prowess again during game two with 52 runs from 32 balls, helping India win another match. Unfortunately, in game three, he was dismissed without scoring. He allowed Sharma to score 35 and 24 runs over his remaining two innings of this series.

According to official accounts, Kishan was rested for two final Twenty Internationals despite his obvious importance – especially given that there wasn’t much T20 action leading up to the World Cup. Was this a wise decision, or should Kishan have played more T20Is before the World Cup?

Success will depend on how both batsmen fare in the Indian Premier League. Selectors would find it hard to overlook Kohli if he is at his peak performance for Royal Challengers Bangalore during IPL 2019.
